Balancing Applied Research

I am looking for a way to keep the tech tree about the way it is (no BM or Devnull), but make it so that Applied Research isn't the uber-tech it currently is.

As I found in my an my brother's first games in the full version (we each played 1 game in the demo first), Applied Research is way too powerful. By using Applied Research, we ended up with more research than all our enemies put together, and easily got the advantage.

However, other than that, I have few problems with the game. I just want to nerf Applied Research enough that researching it and the Colonies aren't enough to set you up for a victory.

Game Duration

I'm just wondering, how long do multiplayer games last, both in game time and real time?

I'm mostly wondering because my strategies in single player games run along the lines of Research and Ally, which tends to slow things down, but it seems like Multiplayer games run too fast/aggressive for that to work from what I've read here.

Ships Inner Hulls, Planets, Climate Control and Intel

I have a few questions:

What do you place in the Inner Hulls of your ships?

Is the component Auxiliary Control useful, do you use it?

When you create a new game what is the average (%) amount of Rock / Ice / Gas / Oxygen / Methane / Hydrogen / None / Carbon dioxide planet types?

The Climate Control Facility improves the planets climate, what are the benefits of that? I think it improves reproduction, are there other benefits than that? Is it worth building?

What are the best/worst areas to use intelligence against your enemies?

Unable to load game

Hi, could someone please help with the following problem. I have a major issue. We have been playing a game every weekend for weeks now and have progressed well with our empires. We save it one night and it comes up the next day when we resume with the message 'Unable to load game file C:Program Files/Empire Interactive/ Malfador Machinations/ Space Empires V/ Savegame/ Jonpatnandynbackup.gam'. This has happened on more than one occasion now and i will not tolerate starting again for the third time i would like this issue resolved. I have read that this has occured to other people and i hope that this is a site that will help me sort it out because i am at breaking point.
