Anyone run into this bug (deteriorating gameplay until it gets unplayable)

Submitted by steinar96 on Wed, 2008-07-09 07:17. Space Empires V General

I've already filed a bug report, but this seems to be a bug that wont go away unless there is a workaround or a patch is made.

I'm running V1.74 of SE5

This bug is a progressing bug, it'll be pretty much non existant at first but things start to deteriorate as the game progresses. Unit movements start getting "backward" twitches, where it twitches backwards and forth in the direction its moving at a constantly increasing frequency. At first maybe 1-2 times over a movement of 10 hexes. Then after 150-200 in game turns the backwards movement starts getting the upper hand and the ships actually start to go BACKWARDS. Which results in a totally unplayable game after 150-200 turns.

Every time the save is loaded the bug is present, starting a new game and it isnt present. So restarting the client does not work.
The camera movement experiences this also in a way, could be descriped as camera lag as you move around.

This is extremely dissapointing since i just bought the game and i really like it.

I'm wondering if anyone has run into this, and if there is a work-around. Otherwise i just wasted my money on a broke product :/

Would you mind posting a saved game...So I can down load it and see if the bug is present on my system.

Or you can just send me the .gam file to , whichever is easier.

Tak

I've loaded the game and played 10 turns and each turn I have moved all the ships possible...I am afraid I haven't experienced any backward twitching. It would seem that the problem is system related... I know that may not be much help, but it does point you in the right direction for getting the problem sorted.

My system is 3 and half years old, with the following specs

Packard Bell
Pentium 4 CPU 3.60Ghz 2.00 GB of Ram
ATI Radeon 9550 / X1050 Series
OS: Windows XP

Thanks alot for that. I'm gonna have to look into this further.

But it's strange how the game's progress affects how bad it is. And that the bug get's saved on my system and the fact that it slowly deteriorates makes me wonder how this could possibly be solved :/

I'll post a solution if i find one in case someone else runs into the same thing. The fact that the units start going backwards points towards the code. So its obviously a system + code bug.

It's gonna suck balls if there's no work-around :/

Proplem solved, the game doesnt like dual core

By setting affinity for only 1 processor the bug goes away.

In case anyone else runs into this, all you have to do is set the affinity for 1 processor in the Task Bar

Thnx for the help btw, helped me alot mate

If you are running an AMD dual core you can have problems like you've described when you have not installed the AMD Dual Core drivers and dual core optimizer for Windows XP. These made a huge difference on my machine. You can download them from AMD's website. These drivers will fix problems in a lot of games.

I have AMD dual core and installed the drivers for it and SEV runs quite well on it.

Ah, that explains alot. I've had to put a heepload of older game to run on just one core because of bugs like that. I'm not sure the drivers fit me though since i'm overlocking my proc freq/voltages and those drivers "automaticly" change the freq and voltages in accordance to cpu usage.

Maybe this is not the best solution...

So you overclock your system to gain a little bit of speed and trade this for having some programs to run on just a single core? Overall performance should be better when you run the PC with proper drivers and use more than one core per application.

Besides - if you should have an old AMD quadcore and use it under Windows WITHOUT the proper drivers, you are inviting trouble.

Here is a quick paste from Wikipedia, concerning quad-core related troubles:

TLB errata

Before Phenom's release, it was discovered that a bug in the translation lookaside buffer (otherwise known as a TLB) in AMD's quad-core processors could cause a system lockup in rare circumstances. Phenom is affected by this bug up to and including stepping "B2" and "BA". There are BIOS and software workarounds to prevent this problem from occurring by disabling the TLB, although the workarounds typically employed incur a performance penalty of at least 10%.

This penalty was not accounted for in early pre-release previews of Phenom, so the performance of early Phenoms delivered to customers is expected to be somewhat below the benchmarks in these previews. Processors with the bug fixed have "50" as the last two digits of the model number, for instance 9650, with stepping "B3" was released March 27, 2008.

An AMD subsidiary has released a patch for the Linux Kernel,[11] which it said has received "minimal functional testing", to overcome this bug by software emulation of accessed- and dirty-bits causing little performance loss.
