Cargo ships are a great way to add to fleets as support ships, so you can give all the firepower to your assult craft/s from battle to battle whilst not having the burden of carrying that much themselves.

You sure you are trying to transfer cargo correctly ? Once contstructed highlight said cargo ship add click on the carg transfer icon. What ever your planet has in cargo from supplies, ordinance, population, troops, units or what ever you can transfer to the cargo ship.

In space use the the same to transfer the cargo around to other ships that need whatever you have on the cargo ship.

Another good tip is to have your cargo ship equipted with solar collector and an ordinance vat.

Also, keep in mind that cargo components cannot carry supplies or ordinance. Cargo components can carry population, mines, fighters, etc. but can not launch them without the appropriate bay (fighter bay, mine layer).
You will need to use cargo ships to land troops on planets, as well as moving fighters to other systems, or to mine warp points.

I'm confused - My Scout (Frigates) use supplies and they have Ordinance loaded. So I cannot use these freighters to resupply these ships in deep space? But I can transfer and place mines, and develop a space fighter carrier ship as well? Thanks for the info.

Weapons have a built-in small capacity to store their own ordinance. If you want them to carry more than that, you need to add Ordinance Storage components.

Similarly, engines have a fair-sized store of supplies, but for extra capacity you need Supply Storage components.

You can transfer supplies and ordinance between ships in space, but the ship carrying the supplies needs a lot of extra Supply Storage and Ordinance Storage. Carriers need the corresponding Launch Bay component to be able to deploy fighters, mines, drones and satellites, or to retrieve the fighters and satellites.

If you have a colony with a Resupply Depot facility built on it, it will (slowly) resupply your ships in that system automatically.

1) Cargo Bay Components can carry People, Mines, Fighters, Drones.
2) Ordinance Storage Containers can carry extra Ordinance.
3) Supply Storage Containers can carry extra supplies.

eg. mine layers can also transfer WP or Drones to planet or can land units on planets using their "mine cargo space" or resupply carriers with fighters and drones

even colonizing modules can carry units within their small cargo space (upgraded hulls may see then more cargo comps) to set up a colony with a starting essemble of units or a very nasty WP (don´t forget to load colonist)^^

This looks to be an associated thread so the same question with perhaps a twist.
I'm fine loading cargo in a single player game. I get it and it works However a few questions on multiplayer
1) I cant load pop in multi-player. I have the ship selected and click on the move cargo icon.
It asks me to select destination, so i click where the ship is and get the pane with the ship and planet in. I select the planet and get the move cargo panel with the ship left and planet right (just like in single player. I select pop in right hand pane and click move cargo left button. A red note appears in the planet pane "drop 1000 pop".
But then nothing happens. next turn no pop on freighter. I've tried also selecting planet then the ship, but still nothing happens. What am I doing wrong?

Speaking of carriers:

They could not only use some additional cargo space (I never use the 'carrier' hull designs but cruisers or battleships instead), but also very much additional supplies and, if the fighters need it, ordnance. The fighters will resupply themselves automatically when they start from the carrier - at cost of the supplies/ammo of the carrier. So if you make use of carriers, be prepared for them using quite huge amounts of supplies.

I have solved that problem for me by combining a repair facility onboard a ship with emergency supplies. These two are the heart of my supply ships (for them, I use the cruiser hull). Then I add emergency ordnance and emergency engines and the ship can go doing its work ... That's also the reason why I was doing some more research in supplies quite fast.

If you then resupply the carrier, the fighters will be resupplied too, so the supplies will first seemingly simply vanish. But they go to the fighters, and as soon as they are resupplied, then the carrier itself can get supplies.

Sorry if the names of the components are wrong, I play the game in german and never saw it in English; I tried to guess how the components are named ...

And I can't say anything about that strange behaviour of the game in multiplayer, 'cause I'm still exploring the possibilities of the game in single player mode myself and never played multiplayer.
